Oman Power and Water Procurement Co (OPWP) on Sunday announced the awarding of Ibri II Solar Independent Power Project (IPP) to a consortium comprised of Saudi Arabia-based ACWA Power and Kuwait’s Gulf Investment Corporation and Alternative Energy Projects Co.
OPWP received proposals from three bidders, including a consortium led by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar), a consortium led by Marubeni Corporation, and a consortium led by Acwa Power.
The project involves the development of the 500 MW solar park around 300km west of Muscat, Oman. The project is scheduled to enter commercial operations in 2021.
The plant output will be enough to supply an estimated 33,000 homes with electricity and will offset 340,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year.
Yaqoob Saif al Kiyumi, CEO of OPWP said:
The globally competitive nature of bid proposals received by OPWP for this tender assures strong interest from global and regional developers in the renewable power sector in Oman going forward”
