Juwi secures permit for a 450-MW solar project in southern Spain

Spain’s National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) has officially given green light to Germany-based PV company Juwi to develop a 450 MW PV project in southern Spain.

The project will be located near Mula in the region of Murcia, and will involve an area spanning 1,088 hectares.  The estimated investment stands at US$506 million. Once completed the solar PV facility will have the capacity to generate more than 750,000,000 kWh annually.

Upon completion, the Mula  project is planned to be the largest photovoltaic solar plant in Europe. Construction works on the project will not begin until the Ministry of Industry also gives its approval.

The government of Murcia assigned the project the status of “Strategic Project” in 2013.  This classification is assigned to infrastructure projects that can determine economic benefits for the region. The project was initially approved by Spain’s Ministry of Environmental Affairs in September 2015.

As we reported in late May, the government of Spain announced a new 3-GW renewable energy auction inspired by the success of the other 3-GW renewable auction round, launched the prior week.

This tenders together with the last week one, have been launched by the Spanish Government to help the country achieve its target to cover 20% of energy consumption from renewables by 2020.
