Spain to hold another 3-GW renewable energy auction

The government of Spain has announced a new 3-GW renewable energy auction, inspired by the success of last auction round.

According to Spain's prime minister Mariano Rajoy the new auction will be conducted before the summer and will be opened to wind and photovoltaic (PV) projects.

This new auction will contribute to improving competition in the domestic electricity market, as well as reduce energy dependence from abroad.

This tender, together with the last week one, has been launched by the Spanish Government to help the country achieve its target to cover 20% of energy consumption from renewables by 2020.

Past auction showed the competitiveness of renewable technologies at current market prices. The last auction resulted in contracts for €43 (US$31.9) per megawatt hour (MWh), the maximum discount rate allowed under the Spanish tendering system. This is the lowest level ever awarded in an onshore wind tender in Europe.
