DONG Energy secures government consent for offshore wind farm expansion

Dong Energy has got development consent from the UK Department for Energy and Climate Change for the 250MW extension of its Burbo Bank offshore wind farm.

Located in the Liverpool Bay, next to the existing 90MW Burbo Bank wind farm, the extension project will feature up to 69 wind turbine generators and associated offshore infrastructure.

The extension will generate enough energy for about 170,000 households.Reuters quoted Dong Energy UK chairman Brent Cheshire as saying:
"Today's announcement is an important step in clearing the way for the company to make a final investment decision on Burbo Bank Extension."
Onshore construction is scheduled to begin in November 2014 and offshore construction will start in 2016.The wind farm is scheduled to be completed by the first quarter of 2017.

The wind farm was developed in the 2000s by SeaScape Energy, which was acquired by Dong Energy in 2005. A 25 turbine installation using Siemens Wind Power 3.6MW turbines was constructed from 2005, and official opened in 2007.
